The Drake women's soccer team won its second-straight game with a 1-0 win over SIUE Friday evening at Drake Stadium.
Drake (1-1-1) scored in the 84th minute when senior
Libby Helverson found
Emma Nagel in the box. Nagel's goal was the first of her collegiate career. Helverson leads the Bulldogs in assists this season with two.
"It was a great ball in from Libby and a fantastic finish from Emma," said Drake head coach
Lindsey Horner. "They're both capable of replicating those moments in the coming games."
The Cougars outshot the Bulldogs 13-6 and recorded five shots on goal. Drake's lone shot on goal was from Nagel.
The Cougars had an opportunity early in the match when Stone came out of the goal to attempt a stop and collided with another player. Stone quickly recovered and returned to the box to stop the Cougars from scoring.
"We couldn't get into the final third as often as we wanted to in the first half, but I was really pleased with some of our adjustments which included getting our fullbacks more involved," Horner said. "It was a bit transitional in the second half. I was very pleased with our back four and their ability to both absorb the counter and protect central spaces."
Goalkeeper
Kelsie Stone was in the net all 90 minutes of play and recorded five saves after facing 13 shots.
"Kelsie came up for us big twice tonight but overall, this was a well-earned team shutout with our midfield winning more headers and our wingers getting good pressure on their backs," Horner said. "This will be a difficult turn around to Sunday so we will focus on our recovery and preparation for St Thomas as we've never played them and look to build on this momentum."
The Bulldogs return to Drake Stadium Sunday to take on St. Thomas at 1 p.m.
