The Drake University women's tennis team faced Marquette and Iowa in Iowa City on Jan. 14 and 15 to open their season. 

The Bulldogs defeated Marquette 7-0 on Friday, but fell to Iowa 1-6 on Saturday. 

Drake had five competitors in the singles competition with the Golden Eagles -- freshman Mille Haagensen, sophomores Ines Stephani and Darinka Stepan, seniors Liza Petushkova and Kelsey Neville. 

Against Marquette, Drake went 2-1 in the doubles portion of the evening. The Bulldogs fell in the first competition, but won the last two. 

On Saturday Drake faced the Hawkeye's Saturday Jan. 15. The Bulldogs had the same five competitors in the singles portion, but added junior Rebecca Ehn to the lineup. 

Petushkova was the only Bulldog to win a singles match on Saturday. She defeated Samantha Mannix 7-6, 6-4.

The Bulldogs were unable to top the Hawkeyes in the doubles portion of the afternoon, falling in all three matches. 

Drake will hit the road and head north to take on Minnesota Jan. 21-22.
