EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Drake women's soccer team battled to score two second half goals and force a 2-2 road draw against Evansville at Arad McCutchan Stadium on Thursday, Oct. 13. The Bulldogs moved to 2-7-6 overall and 1-2-4 in the Missouri Valley Conference while the Purple Aces are now 1-8-5 (0-5-3).
The first half proved to be a physical and defensive battle. Drake and Evansville combined for seven total shots. The two teams were even for the most part of the first 45 minutes.
Drake had a chance to score in the first half when
Emma Nagel found an open shot in the 33rd minute. Nagel had a great look in the box after a beautiful set up pass from Panther, but ultimately the shot saved by Evansville goalkeeper Myia Danek.
Evansville proved to be one shot better than Drake in the first half, striking late in the 43rd minute. Monique Landrum scored her first goal of the season in the top center of the net after being set up by Rachel Rosborough.
"It was an interesting first half," head coach
Lindsey Horner said. "We had the ball a lot, but didn't have enough crosses, shots or corners to show from it."
The Purple Aces extended their lead in the 50th minute when Ryleigh Anslinger popped in her first goal of the season, going one on one with Bulldog keeper
Vianey Lopez. Anslinger was assisted by Hailey Autenrieb.
"I thought we had momentum and a good chance on a corner but got countered for the second goal." Horner said. "Our players showed a lot of grit to get themselves back in the game. The energy our bench brought was fantastic."
The Bulldogs had another prime opportunity off a corner kick when
Madelyn Smith teed it up to Nagel in the 64th minute. Nagel got her head on it to send the ball into the left corner of the net as the deficit was cut in half, 2-1.
Meghan Brown scored the equalizer on another header, this time just outside of the six-yard box set up by an excellent cross from
Lily Overstreet.
Suddenly, the visitors from Des Moines had all the momentum. The Bulldogs were on the edge of completing an incredible comeback when 90 minutes flashed on the scoreboard and the match ended in a 2-2 tie.
"It felt like we were going to get the game-winner but just ran out of time," Horner said. "We look forward to rolling this momentum into Indiana State on Sunday."
Drake women's soccer will be on the way to Indiana State for a 12 p.m. (CT) kickoff against the Sycamores on Sunday, Oct. 16.
