TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Drake volleyball continued their sensational 2022 campaign with a 3-0 sweep at Indiana State (26-24, 25-14, 25-19) this evening. The Bulldogs bounced back from a lackluster first set to demolish the Sycamores in the final two periods to earn the win. Drake's win improved their record to 18-6 overall and 9-2 in MVC play, maintaining their hold on second place in the Valley standings.
Indiana State (3-16, 2-9) came ready to play with an impressive effort in the opening set. The Sycamores exploded out of the gate with a 7-0 run to start the match. Drake was forced to take an early timeout and began their rally. The Bulldogs chipped away throughout the remainder of the first set and regained momentum with a 5-0 run to cut the ISU lead to just two points. Drake continued their charge and finished the set on a 6-1 sprint to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Bulldogs completely flipped the script in the second set with one of their most dominant single-set performances of the season. Drake opened the stanza with a 13-5 lead capped off by a pair of kills from
Haley Bush and
Ashlynn Kuhn. Drake led by as many as 13 points on their way to a 25-14 set win to go up two sets to none.
Indiana State provided some resistance in the third set, but Drake was able to overcome the hosts' challenges to secure the victory. The Bulldogs took control of the set with a pair of Sycamore errors that gave Drake a 14-8 lead. ISU rallied but could not keep pace with the Dogs as Drake took the set 25-19 and earned their third-straight sweep.
"It was a very good weekend for our team," Drake head coach
Darrin McBroom said after the win. "We didn't come out of the gate as sharp as we'd like, but we showed a lot of composure and discipline.
Haley Bush and
Jada Wills had a great night, [Jada's] getting really close to the 1,000-mark [in digs].
Kacie Rewerts also served well and had some key blocks. We always ask ourselves, 'how can we be a better team?' I think what we've done the past few games is allowing our players to be confident; we perform well and that's important down the stretch and beyond. We are just a very united, cohesive team."
Haley Bush and
Mariana Rodrigues led all players with 19 kills and 11 kills, respectively.
Addison Beagle had another phenomenal game coordinating the Drake offense with 42 assists. Both
Jada Wills and
Gabbie Schroeder posted a pair of service aces. Wills also led the match with 28 digs, tying her third-highest effort of the year.
Drake will return home for their penultimate home stretch next weekend. The Bulldogs will host Belmont on Friday, Oct. 28 and Murray State on Saturday, Oct. 29.
