Drake Scorches Flames in Regular Season Finale, 3-1

Bulldogs secure second-overall seed in MVC Tournament

DES MOINES, Iowa – Drake men's soccer completed their 2022 regular season schedule this evening with a 3-1 drubbing of the UIC Flames. Drake completed the season sweep of the Flames with their home victory.

Both teams played through a timid first half with little offensive action. Drake tallied just three shots to UIC's eight in the opening 45 minutes.

The Bulldogs made several adjustments during the halftime hiatus and came out much more aggressive in the second half. Just 10 minutes into the second period, Drake broke the scoreless tie. Sam Thornton collected his fifth goal (56') of the season after assists by Louis Yuill and Valdemar Nambo.

Late in the period, UIC keeper picked up a yellow card on a rough tackle of Leroy Enzugusi in the box, forcing a Drake penalty kick. The Bulldogs' leading scorer, AJ Franklin, stepped up to attempt the PK and delivered. Franklin's penalty goal (69') was his eighth of the year.

Just a few moments later, after two tremendous passes from Thornton and Franklin, Leroy Enzugusi joined the party with his first score of the season (71') to put Drake in front 3-0.

UIC managed a goal of their own in the 82nd minute but could not climb any closer as Drake's lead was just too wide.

AJ Franklin led Drake with four shots, two of which were on target, followed by Enzugusi with three and Thornton with two. Jonathan Burke made two saves in goal to anchor Drake's defensive effort.

"I am so proud to be a part of this team," Drake head coach Pat Flinn said after the victory. "Without the commitment of every single one of these young men, along with Kyle Smith and the rest of the staff, we would not be in the position we are in right now."

Drake's victory secured their position as the two-seed in the 2022 MVC Tournament. The Bulldogs will face off against Bradley on Sunday, Nov. 6 at noon in Des Moines.

"We will celebrate the regular season at another time, [but] for now out focus is immediately on our MVC quarterfinal against Bradley," Flinn continued. "Bradley is a proud program that makes you earn a result against them, and I expect a real battle. Go Bulldogs!"
