Meyer Paces Bulldogs in Win Over Loyola

The transfer junior led the Bulldogs in scoring on Sunday.

DES MOINES, IOWA -- The Drake University women's basketball team scored 12 points in the final 28.7 seconds of what had been a close game and beat Loyola 84-76 at the Knapp Center on Sunday to gain a regular-season split with the Ramblers.

The Bulldogs got contributions up and down the lineup in beating Loyola for the 10th time in 11 games at home and improving to 12-10 overall and 4-7 in the Missouri Valley Conference. Loyola, which beat Drake 63-46 in Chicago a month ago when the Bulldogs were missing four players, fell to 12-9 and 4-6. It was Loyola's last visit to the Knapp Center as a league opponent. The Ramblers will play in the Atlantic-10 next season.

Megan Meyer went 4-for-7 from 3-point range and led Drake with 18 points. Grace Berg added 12 points, four steals and three assists, while Allie Wooldridge gave the Bulldogs 20 solid minutes with 11 points on 5-for-6 shooting and four rebounds.

Maggie Bair did her part with 10 points and a team-best nine rebounds and Maddie Petersen, starting for the first time since Jan. 13, had 10 points and two assists. Petersen had just returned to action on Friday night after missing four games because of a hand injury.

Freshman Katie Dinnebier matched her career high with four steals and finished with eight points, four rebounds and four assists. Freshman Anna Miller pulled down seven rebounds and blocked a shot.

Drake finished with 12 steals to match its season best and forced 15 turnovers in all. The Bulldogs had assists in 20 of their 26 baskets and took care of the ball, committing only nine turnovers.

The game had eight ties and seven lead changes before two big plays from Dinnebier helped Drake edge ahead to stay. She grabbed an offensive rebound and fed Meyer for a 3-pointer from the top of the key that put the Bulldogs ahead 52-50, then stole the ball and fired a crosscourt pass to Meyer, who buried another 3 from the left wing to make it 55-50.

The Bulldogs twice built the lead to 10 points, the second time at 65-55 on Bair's turnaround shot in the lane. Loyola clawed back and trailed just 72-70 when Allison Day scored inside with 29.7 seconds left.

With the shot clock off, the Ramblers had to foul and the Bulldogs began their final spree.

Dinnebier sank two free throws, Berg stole the ball at midcourt and went in for a layup and Meyer dropped in a pair from the line after a technical foul on the Loyola bench. The Bulldogs maintained possession and Dinnebier sank two more free throws to make it 80-70 with 23.6 seconds remaining.

Two late 3-pointers from Loyola weren't enough and Petersen and Berg each made two free throws to wrap it up. The Bulldogs made all 15 of their free throws in the fourth quarter and finished 24-of-28 for the game.

The Bulldogs gave an indication of what was to come by stealing the ball on Loyola's first two possessions for a quick 4-0 lead. The Ramblers came back quickly and built a 35-30 lead late in the first half before Berg's driving layup just before the halftime buzzer tied it at 38. Loyola moved out to another five-point lead in the third quarter, but the Bulldogs rallied again and led 57-52 when Wooldridge beat the third-quarter buzzer with a short jumper.

Sam Galanopoulos led Loyola with 18 points, going 4-for-5 on 3-pointers and 7-for-10 overall. The Ramblers shot 49 percent, but the Bulldogs' quick hands on defense helped them to a 20-9 edge in points off turnovers.

The Bulldogs return to action next Friday night in the first of three straight road games, playing at Missouri State. Game time is 7 p.m.
