AUSTIN, Texas -- The Drake University softball team fell in both of its games on the second day of the Bevo Classic at Red & Charline McCombs Field against Nicholls and Minnesota on Saturday (March 12). The Bulldogs moved to 5-12 overall this season.
Nicholls 9, Drake 2
Both teams left a pair of runners on base early on including the Bulldogs in the bottom of the second inning when they put runners at first and second with nobody out after a
Skylar Rigby walk and
MaKayla Rice infield single. A sac bunt by
Addie Lightner moved both runners into scoring position before Rigby was out at the plate on a fielder's choice from
Carey Koenig.
Nicholls broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third on an Alexa Poche' 2-run single up the middle. Kennedy Hebert doubled home Poche' as the Colonels commanded a 3-0 advantage.
Danielle Duplay delivered for Nicholls with a pair of runners in scoring position on a double to the gap in left center to create a 5-0 margin.
Trailing 9-0 in the bottom of the sixth, Drake loaded the bases and pushed across two runs.
Aubree Beitzinger put together a great plate appearance and drew a bases loaded walk and the next batter, Lightner drove in
Emily Valtman on a sacrifice fly.
Emma Richards (2-4) took the loss in 3.1 innings of work.
Mackenzie Hupke struck out five batters in 3.2 innings of relief work.
Minnesota 8, Drake 0
Nicole Timmons (2-5) got the start in the circle as the game was scoreless through two innings. Natalie Denhartog hit a solo homer over the wall in centerfield to lead off the bottom of the third inning for Minnesota. An RBI single by Emily Hansen through the right side of the infield and a bases loaded walk drawn by Ellee Jensen put the Golden Gophers ahead, 3-0.
Leading 4-0 in the bottom of the sixth frame, Minnesota loaded the bases and walked in four runs to bring the contest to a close.
Drake will take on host Texas in its final game of the Bevo Classic on Sunday morning (March 13) at 9:30 a.m.
