ST. LOUIS – Drake men's basketball forward
ShanQuan Hemphill was honored with a State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Good Neighbor Award, the league announced on Thursday (March 24). Ten student-athletes have been named by Commissioner Jeff Jackson as the honorees for the 2021-22 Winter season.
Hemphill has a 3.33 grade point average in his Master of Arts Communication program while earning a place on the MVC Honor Roll. The Gary, Ind., native has volunteered with Special Olympics – Champions Together, nursing homes and assisted in city cleanup efforts following the derecho in Iowa. He has also been a youth basketball camp counselor and has donated/distributed food to the less fortunate.
This year's winter honorees include Riley Burger, Bradley, Men's Basketball;
ShanQuan Hemphill, Drake, Men's Basketball; Maggie Franz, Evansville, Swimming & Diving; Julie Kolar, Illinois State, Swimming & Diving; Mia Mackenzie, Indiana State, Women's Indoor Track & Field; Chantz Visse, Loyola, Men's Indoor Track & Field; Samantha Roemer, Missouri State, Swimming & Diving; Austin Phyfe, Northern Iowa, Men's Basketball; Caitlin Link, Southern Illinois, Women's Basketball; Alek Trafton, Valparaiso, Men's Indoor Track & Field.
In order to be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must be in good academic standing, must demonstrate good citizenship through good sportsmanship and significant community service, and must participate in a sport, during the season of recognition. The Valley will recognize 10 student-athletes three times annually (Fall, Winter, Spring), for a total of 30 honorees. Institutions select their State Farm MVC Good Neighbor Award honorees.
