DES MOINES, Iowa -- Busiwa Asinga made history on the final day of the Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Drake University at Drake Stadium on Sunday, May 15.
In front of the home crowd, Asinga ran away from the pack for the win in her season-best of 59.55 seconds to become the first-ever Drake Bulldog to win the women's 400-meter hurdles at the MVC Championships. She cruised past the field by more than three seconds while the band of blue in the stands at Drake Stadium roared when Asinga sprinted down the home stretch. Freshman
Madison Bunton finished with a personal best of 1:02.53 placing fourth.
"I went into it knowing that I had to get over the first hurdle and then everything else will fall into place," Asinga said. "I'm really grateful that I got the opportunity to win at home."
All eyes were on junior
Isaac Basten in the men's 1500m run. On the home stretch, Basten was boxed in but showed the burst of speed Bulldog fans are familiar with to regain first with the record in sight. Basten earned the gold medal with a time of 3:54.21. He now has eight total first place finishes this year.
"I used a 100 percent sprint in the back straightaway," Basten said. "I was trying to hang on for the last 200 (meters) and luckily I did."
Basten's teammate and school record holder in the men's 1500m run
Adam Fogg did not compete in the MVC Outdoor Championships due to an emergency appendectomy.
"Adam is my training partner and one of my best friends," Basten said. "It's tough to see him go down like that. I know he wanted me to get the 1500m title for him, myself and Drake. I'm really happy that I got it done."
On the men's side, a pair of Bulldogs went head-to-head in the men's 400m hurdles (
David Olowookere and
Angelo Romagna). Olowookere took fourth with a time of 52.10 while Romagna was right behind him in fifth with a new personal-best of 52.78.
Senior
Cloud Masibhera finished in the top-five for the 23rd time since 2019. In the men's triple job, he started the day jumping 48 feet and 6 inches. Masibhera ended his day in fourth place.
In the men's 400m dash
Caleb Lerus finished sixth with a time of 48.25 as the only freshman in the field. It marked a new personal-best for Lerus only a day after he ran 48.36 in Saturday's prelims.
The women's 100m hurdles featured sophomore
Maria Patron as she finished sixth clocking in at 14.47. The 4x400m relays were the last events of the day. On the men's side of the 4x400, Drake finished fifth with a time of 3:19.21. The women's 4x400m relay also took fifth with a mark of 3:48.61 following a strong finish by Asinga as the anchor.
Aziz Jdai and
Anthony Barmes shared the MVC Outdoor Track & Field Freshman of the Year award (most points scored) with William Staggs of Indiana State.
