Multiple Bulldogs to Represent Drake Track & Field at West Preliminary

Six Drake track & field student-athletes will compete in the NCAA West Preliminary with a chance to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

The NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track & Field and Cross Country Committee has announced the participants for the 2022 Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships preliminary competitions on Friday, May 20. Drake University track & field will send six athletes to compete in the West Preliminary hosted by the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark., May 25-28.

Drake's selected participants in the 2022 NCAA West Preliminary are Busiwa Asinga (400m Hurdles), Anthony Barmes (Hammer Throw), Isaac Basten (1500m), Joey Harkins (Hammer Throw), Aziz Jdai (3000m Steeplechase) and Katelyn Williams (Hammer Throw).

Asinga ran her season best of 59.55 to win the 400m Hurdles at the MVC Outdoor Championships on April 15.

Anthony Barmes broke his own program record and set a MVC Outdoor Championships meet record in the hammer throw (217-7) on May 13. On the same day, Joey Harkins also set a personal record (204-6) in the hammer. On the women's side, Katelyn Williams tossed a season best of 194-9 at the 2022 Drake Relays.

2022 NCAA indoor track & field All-American Isaac Basten recorded his season best of 3:39.08 in the 1500m run at the Bryan Clay Invitational on April 15. Two weeks before, Basten won the 1500m run at the Drake Relays by holding off Moad Zahafi of Texas Tech producing the first victory in the event by a Drake male athlete since 1981, edging the Moroccan challenger by a 3:39.11 to 3:39.59 margin.

In another stellar Drake Relays performance Aziz Jdai now ranks third in program history in the men's 3000m steeplechase with a time of 8:50.34. Jdai was victorious in the men's 3000m steeple at the MVC Outdoor Championships on May 14.
