DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Drake Univeristy softball team run ruled Missouri State, 8-0, in five innings to win the final home game of the season on Senior Day.
Prior to the game, the Bulldogs recognized their four seniors --
Macy Johnson,
Libby Ryan,
Nicole Timmons, and
Alexia Lara.
In the bottom of the first,
Emily Valtman was the Bulldogs first batter and swung at the first pitch she was thrown. She slammed a ball over the right field wall to record her 11th home run of the season and put Drake on the board 1-0.
Three batters later, Ryan stepped up to the plate and doubled to left field, allowing
Delaney Taylor to score and give Drake a 2-0 advantage.
The Bears attempted to minimize the Bulldogs lead by getting runners into scoring position, but the Bulldog defense was so quick, as Drake made a number of double plays.
In the bottom of the fifth,
Addie Lightner reached first on a fielders choice and then advanced to second on an error by the Bear's shortstop. Johnson and Valtman were both on base at the time and score, to make it a 4-0 Bulldogs lead.
Paige Bedsworth came up to the plate and the first pitch thrown her way was a ball. Ryan stole second, Lightner stole third, and Taylor stole home. Bedsworth then doubled to centerfield, bringing Ryan and Lightner across home and ending the game in the bottom of the fifth, 8-0. Bedsworth led the team with two RBI's.
Nicole Timmons spent her final home game in the circle for Drake. She recorded four stikeouts and picked up her sixth win of the season.
The Bulldogs prepare for the Missouri Valley Tournament in Springfield, Mo. which starts on Wednesday May 11.
