EUGENE, Ore. — The numbers are impressive when reviewing the recent World Athletics Championships track and field extravaganza held at Hayward Field.
Ninety-eight Drake Relays presented by Xtream powered by Mediacom alumni, including 46 individuals who have won Drake Relays titles, competed in the meet.
And if the Drake Relays alumni were a country, it would have finished second on the medal table with 24, trailing only the United States, which had World Championships record 33.
The medals accumulated by Drake Relays alumni were equally distributed: eight gold, eight silver and eight bronze.
The World Championships provided 10 days of unforgettable moments. Drake Relays alumni accomplished three of the biggest highlights from the meet.
Two-time Olympic gold medalist and world record holder
Ryan Crouser (
2019, 2021, 2022 Drake Relays champ) earned a gold medal in the men's shot put on his last throw, setting a championship record of 75-3.25.
Two-time defending Drake Relays champ
Allison Dos Santos stole the show in the men's 400 hurdles which was one of the most anticipated races of the World Championships. In an epic rematch of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics when all three medalists broke the world record, Dos Santos ran a championship record 46.29, beating Olympic gold medalist and world record holder Karsten Wharholm of Norway as well as Olympic silver medalist Rai Benjamin of the U.S. It was the first gold medal won by Brazil at the World Championships since 2011.
On the final day,
Tobi Amusan (2
nd-
2018 & 4th-2019 Drake Relays) obliterated the 100 women's 100 hurdles world record en route to winning the first gold medal ever for Nigeria, clocking a stunning 12.12 in the semifinals and a wind-assisted 12.06 in the final.
Abby Steiner, who won four NCAA titles for Kentucky and ran on two winning Wildcat relay teams at the Drake Relays, captured two gold medals for Team USA after running legs on the winning 4x100 and 4x400 relays.
Team USA's
Allyson Felix (
2006 Drake Relays) extended her world record medal total to 20 after gold in the women's 4x400 relay and bronze in the mixed 4x400 relay.
Besides Amusan's record-setting performance, world records were set by Sydney McLaughlin of Team USA in the women's hurdles (50.68) and Sweden's Mondo Duplantis in the pole vault (20-4.5).
There were 13 championship records and 30 world-leading performances along with 92 national records.
Crouser was part of the U.S. medal sweep in the men's shot put, while Team USA also swept the men's 100 and 200. Former Drake Relays champs
Kenny Bednarek (
2019 invitational 200 champ) and
Trayvon Brommell (
2014 UD/CD 100 champ) earned silver and bronze medals in those 200 and 100 sweeps, respectively.
1,705 athletes from 179 countries competed in Oregon. A record-breaking 29 countries won gold medals at the World Championships.
