AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – The Drake University volleyball team swept CSUN in the 2022 season opener (25-16, 25-23, 25-19) as part of the Amy Svoboda Memorial Classic hosted by Air Force at Cadet East Gym on Friday, Aug. 26.

Darrin McBroom said. "There were some things we discovered that we need to get better at and that's a good thing. I was proud of our ability to come from behind in the second set with grit and tenacity. We served and received the ball very well today. Freshmen like
Addison Beagle,
Gabbie Schroeder and
Macy Daufeldt stepped up in their debuts."
Mariana Rodrigues tallied the first point of the match and season after a perfect set from Beagle. Drake took a 6-2 lead in the opening set after a kill from
Haley Bush, a Missouri Valley Conference Preseason Team selection.
Up 21-16, the Bulldogs closed out the first set with four consecutive points capped off by a block assist on the far end of the net by
Taylor Oberpriller and
Macy DeLeye. Drake claimed set one over CSUN by a score of 25-16.
The Bulldogs fell behind 7-1 early in the second set and eventually faced a 15-6 deficit. Bush slammed a laser to the hardwood to bring Drake within two in the second set, trailing 17-15. Drake brought the second set even at 22-22 when
Kacie Rewerts was there for a block, which helped propel DU to a 25-23 victory in set two.
Drake jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in the third set one of Oberpriller's 15 kills. The Matadors responded with a 7-0 run and led 18-15 when Daufeldt began serving. Daufeldt helped the Bulldogs to eight straight points including a pair of service aces. Suddenly, Drake led 23-18 and finished the third set, 25-19 for a season opening sweep.
Rodrigues added 11 kills,
Ashlynn Kuhn delivered four blocks and
Jada Wills recorded 15 kills as the libero.
The Amy Svoboda Memorial Classic continues Saturday, Aug. 26 as Drake takes on Texas A&M – Commerce at 11 a.m. (CT) before the 8 p.m. (CT) tournament finale against host Air Force.

- Taylor Oberpriller set a career-high with 15 kills.
