Bulldogs Begin Road Stretch with Loss at Minnesota

Drake got off to a scrappy start before Minnesota grabbed momentum late in the first half.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Drake University women's soccer team was defeated by Big Ten opponent Minnesota, 4-0 at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 1. Drake moved to 1-4-0 on the season, while Minnesota improved to 1-3-1-0 overall.
 
"I thought we were organized, disciplined and hard working to start the game," head coach Lindsey Horner said. "It was a tad frustrating that a looping ball over the top and some indecision that led to a goal. The real part of our game that we need to work on is letting one goal become two quite quickly. We put a solid 80 minutes into the game but just weren't dialed in for about 10 minutes."
 
The Bulldogs came out with energy as Rachel Panther blasted a shot high to the left of the goal in the eighth minute. 10 minutes later, another shot by Panther was blocked by the Minnesota back line. Drake played physical but could not connect on its crosses in the opening half. 
 
It was a scoreless deadlock until the 36th minute when Delaney Stekr lofted the ball on a bounce to Izzy Brown. After collecting herself, Brown lured Drake goalkeeper Vianey Lopez out of the six-yard box and dragged a shot into the bottom left corner of the net. 
 
About four minutes later, the Golden Gophers doubled their lead. Sophia Boman nearly scored, but Lopez batted the ball back as Abi Frandsen took control. Frandsen passed it to Christa Van Loon, who unloaded an upper 90 rocket into the top left corner of the net. The Bulldogs entered halftime with a 2-0 deficit. 
 
Brown scored back-to-back goals for Minnesota early in the second half. Brown scored her second goal of the game in the 50th minute and her third just a minute after that. 

"We do think that playing these games will make us better, Horner said. "We are going through some growing pains. With some experience, we can turn things around."
 
The Bulldogs continue the five-game road stretch with a 6 p.m. Sunday night (Sept. 4) contest at South Dakota State.
 
NOTES
  • Kelti Wise entered as a substitution in net for Drake starting goalkeeper Vianey Lopez during the 57th minute. 
  • The Golden Gophers outshot the Bulldogs by a 20-6 margin (9-1 shots on goal). Layla Kelbel registered the lone shot on goal for Drake. 
  • Minnesota leads the head-to-head series, 5-1-1.
