Ames, Iowa – The Drake volleyball team finished play at the Cardinal & Gold Challenge in Ames this weekend with a win over in-state foe Iowa. The Bulldogs improved to 7-2 overall after taking down the Hawkeyes in four sets (25-23, 22-25, 25-21, 25-19). The loss for Iowa set them back to 3-5 on the 2022 season.
Drake opened the match with five unanswered points including two
Macy Daufeldt kills and two Addie Schmeirer aces. The Hawkeyes rallied with a 12-1 run of their own to capture the lead. Both teams traded points the rest of the set until Daufeldt delivered the final kill to take the set 25-23.
Both squads battled through the second set with long rallies on either side. At one point in the stanza, Drake scored four unanswered on four Hawkeye errors to trim the Iowa lead to 17-10. The Bulldogs eventually got within two points on another Daufeldt kill but could not scratch any closer as the Hawks won the set 25-22.
The third set saw similar back-and-forth action until the last few scores. Drake rattled off four-straight points on a Daufeldt kill and three more Iowa miscues to win the set and take the match lead.
Finally, the Bulldogs controlled the majority of the fourth and final set. Already leading 15-11,
Haley Bush and
Ashlynn Kuhn provided a quartet of kills to take a nine-point advantage. The Hawkeyes scrapped their way back within five but could not handle a potent Bulldog attack as Drake celebrated the 4-1 with 25-19 win in the fourth set.
"[I'm] really proud of our entire team today," Drake head volleyball coach
Darrin McBroom said after the win. "This was a tough weekend, and we were able to pull off two upset wins. We saw some players come off the bench and have an immediate impact. We hope to build on this."
The Bulldogs will be on the road again for their next competition. Drake will take on SIUE at the Green Bay Invite in Green Bay, Wis. On Friday, Sept. 16 at 1 p.m.
