DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake women's tennis team opened their spring schedule with a pair of home non-conference matches. The Bulldogs began the weekend with a tilt against Iowa State on Saturday, Jan. 14 before wrapping up play in the Roger Knapp Tennis Center against South Dakota on Sunday, Jan. 15.
The weekend's contests marked the start of a new era in Drake tennis as it was the first display under new head coach Breaunna Addison.
The Cyclones controlled every match against Drake. Iowa State swept the Bulldogs in both singles and doubles competition.
Ines Stephani and
Elizabete Klavinska provided the toughest challenge, dropping their matches in 6-4 straight sets.
"Iowa State played disciplined, high-quality tennis and demonstrated why they're one of the best teams in the country." Head coach Breaunna Addison said after Saturday's action. "We made a few too many errors in some crucial moments, however we played with confidence and executed on the skills we implemented in practice."
The Bulldogs came back this morning to earn their first victory of the spring season in a 7-0 sweep of South Dakota.
Ines Stephani was able to take care of South Dakota's Bea Havlickova in the no. 1 match. Elsewhere,
Mille Haagensen and
Oriana Parkins-Godwin defeated their opponents by 6-2, 6-0 combinations.
In doubles, Stephani and Parkins-Godwin made quick work of the Coyotes' Grace Chadick and Sydney Weinberg duo. The third doubles match was unfinished after
Kendall Hunt and
Elizabete Klavinska got out to a 6-5 lead.
"It's great to get our first win of the season." Coach Addison added after Sunday's action. "Our team came out with good intensity and set the tone from the first point of the match. We played simple, disciplined tennis, and set a good foundation for the rest of the season."
The Bulldogs will continue their non-conference slate next weekend when they host Marquette on Saturday, Jan. 21.
