DES MOINES, Iowa -- Both teams made big shots in overtime, but Missouri State knocked down four key free throws at the end and handed the Drake men's basketball team a 65-62 loss at the Knapp Center on Wednesday night (Jan. 18).
The lead changed hands four times in the extra session, with Drake (14-6, 5-4) taking its last lead at 62-61 on
Roman Penn's fadeaway jumper from the left baseline with 2:03 left. Alston Mason's two free throws put the Bears (10-9, 6-3) back on top, 63-62, with 1:32 to play.
The Bulldogs had a chance to retake the lead when
Darnell Brodie blocked a shot with 40 seconds remaining. Following a Drake timeout,
Garrett Sturtz stole the ball after missing a shot, but Missouri State forced a jump ball and had the possession arrow. Bryan Trimble Jr. then sank two free throws to finish it off for the Bears and end Drake's 12-game winning streak at home and sweep the regular-season series with the Bulldogs.
"I didn't play enough guys," head coach
Darian DeVries said. "I thought we got fatigued in the second half. We might have been a half-step slow on the defensive end and it was disappointing in that regard. We had a great first half but couldn't sustain it in the second half."
Tucker DeVries led Drake with 26 points and Brodie added 13 on perfect shooting – 5-for-5 from the field and 3-for-3 at the free throw line. Penn added seven points and seven rebounds, while Sturtz had six rebounds, four points and two steals.
Trimble and Donovan Clay led Missouri State with 16 points each. Clay got all of his points in the second half after going 0-for-5 in the first 20 minutes.
Drake led by as many as 14 points in the first half and was up 36-23 after DeVries sank two free throws with 19:19 to play. Missouri State then turned up its defense, began hitting its shots at the other end and rallied, finally pulling ahead at 51-50 on Clay's 3-pointer – the Bears' first lead since it was 2-0.
Brodie scored on a strong move inside and added two free throws to lift the Bulldogs into a 54-51 lead, only to see the Bears go back ahead at 56-54 on another 3 by Clay.
DeVries tied it at 56 with a pair of free throws and the Bulldogs got a chance for the final shot when
D.J. Wilkins stole the ball with 25 seconds to go. They got the ball to DeVries, but he missed a jumper from the baseline, sending the Bulldogs into their second overtime game of the season. They had won the first one, beating UIC in Chicago 76-71 on Jan. 10.
Drake shot 48 percent in the first half in taking a 34-21 lead at the break, a sharp contrast to the 30-23 halftime deficit the Bulldogs faced in their New Year's Day game at Missouri State, which won that one 52-49. But they made just 8-of-27 shots in the second half and overtime, including 2-for-11 from 3-point range.
"Missouri State went to a zone with some fouls late in the first half and it slowed us down a little bit,"
Darian DeVries said. "In the second half, we just didn't get enough movement and we didn't get Brodie enough touches. That's on me."
Missouri State shot 53.4 percent after halftime and finished 11-for-24 from distance while Drake was 6-for-25. The Bulldogs cashed in at the free throw line, making 14-of-15, but it simply wasn't enough to offset their struggles from the perimeter.
Drake will try to bounce back on Saturday, Jan. 21, at Evansville. Game time is 3 p.m.
