WICHITA, Kan. – The Drake University women's tennis team traveled to former MVC foe Wichita State for their first road match of the season. Despite multiple tough efforts across the entire Drake lineup, the host Shockers defeated the Bulldogs by a 5-2 margin.
The Shockers opened the day's action by picking up a point in doubles play. The Bulldogs were able to earn a win in the second doubles position as
Oriana Parkins-Godwin and
Ines Stephani teamed up to take down Wichita State's pairing of Jessica Anzo and Kristina Kudryatseva.
Wichita State also controlled most of the singles contests as Drake won just two of the six matches.
In the No. 1 spot,
Ines Stephani came back after dropping the first set to defeat Anzo in three. In the No. 4 singles spot,
Elizabete Klavinska earned her third-straight singles victory with a three-set win over Kudryatseva.
"The match really came down to just a few points," Drake head coach Breaunna Addison stated. "And I couldn't have asked for a better fight from our team. We are a bit disappointed that we didn't win, but I am excited to see our team continue to learn and build momentum throughout the season."
The Bulldogs will return home for their next match when they host Kansas City on Thursday, Feb. 2 in Des Moines.
