ST. LOUIS -- Drake women's soccer sophomore forward
Layla Kelbel was named Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week and freshman forward
Angela Gutierrez racked up another MVC Freshman of the Week award, the league announced on Tuesday (Oct. 17).
Kelbel has scored a goal in back-to-back wins for the Bulldogs. She tallied an unassisted goal when she battled to get the ball back in the 55
th minute contributing to Drake's 3-0 victory at Illinois State on Thursday. Kelbel scored the game-winner in a 1-0 decision over Evansville during the 30
th minute by tapping the ball into the back of the net on Sunday. Kelbel is second on the team with five goals scored so far this season.
Gutierrez scored her fourth goal of the season to put away the game in the 63
rd minute at Illinois State on Thursday. She added her team-best fourth assist of the season to help set up the game-winning goal in the 1-0 victory over Evansville on Sunday.
Drake women's soccer currently leads the MVC standings and will end the regular season with back-to-back road games starting at Murray State on Thursday, Oct. 19.
