Offensive Output too Much for Redbirds in 3-0 Sweep

Daufeldt records double-double as Drake picks up second sweep of the weekend

DES MOINES, Iowa – Drake volleyball (18-7, 11-2) continued their solid 2023 campaign with another sweep, this time over a resurgent Illinois State squad (11-14, 9-4). The Redbirds entered the weekend tied with the Bulldogs for second in The Valley, but two-straight Drake victories widened the gap. Drake was able to overcome a competitive opening period to roll to their fourth-straight win 25-21, 25-12, 25-17.

Drake began all three sets with a 3-0 advantage. They were able to build an early lead in the first period, leading by as many as five. The Redbirds were able to chip away and maintained a short deficit, eventually tying the score at 20-all on an Emily Weber service ace. The Bulldogs then ripped off another 4-0 rally including three Illinois State errors and a Kacie Rewerts kill as they secured the 25-21 set win.

The second set was controlled by Drake from start to finish. Drake again jumped out to a substantial lead to begin the frame and never looked back. The Bulldogs' lead continued to grow as two-straight kills from Ashlynn Kuhn and Macy Daufeldt put an exclamation mark on the 25-12 set win.

Illinois State provided their sturdiest test in the third set after again trailing in the early stages. A Daufeldt service error gave the Redbirds their first lead of the contest, but that lead vanished quickly. Taylor Oberpriller and Kacie Rewerts went back-to-back to promptly put Drake back on top.

Another late Bulldog run, this time 5-0, ballooned the Drake lead as Addison Beagle eventually dropped in a service ace to earn the 25-17 set win and 3-0 match victory.

Daufeldt led all players with 11 kills and was just one dig away from recording a double-double. Haley Bush's 11 digs trailed only Jada Wills' 17 as the former was also just shy of a double-double with nine kills.

Defensively. Kacie Rewerts blocked five Redbird hits. Addison Beagle led the Bulldogs with 19 assists while Wills was the only player to score more than one ace.

"Whenever you're playing a big game, you need your players to step up and play big and I'm really proud of our team tonight," Drake head coach Darrin McBroom said. "Illinois State is a really strong program. They've been on a hot streak lately and we knew tonight would be a tough match for us. I'm proud of the resiliency for us…winning a lot of the long rallies, taking care of the ball, and just finding ways to win points even when things weren't going easy."

Drake will be back in action next weekend as they remain in Des Moines to close their home schedule. The Bulldogs host Evansville on Friday, Nov. 3 before welcoming Indiana State to the Knapp Center for Senior Night on Saturday, Nov. 4.
