Bulldogs Benefit from Early Advantage and Late Resilience in Sweep of Sycamores

Bush leads all players with 14 kills in third-straight road win

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Drake volleyball (11-6, 4-1) dominated the first two sets and snuck out with a win in the third in a 3-0 sweep of Indiana State (2-13, 0-5). Friday's victory was Drake's third-straight road win.

The Bulldogs sprinted through the first two sets with little resistance from Indiana State. Drake opened the first period on a roll, building a 10-4 lead. Haley Bush sparked an 8-1 run in the middle of the frame to double up Indiana State at 22-11. Back-to-back Sycamore errors eventually gave Drake the 25-13 win.

Indiana State showed more life in the middle stanza, maintaining a narrow deficit through most of the set. Leading 18-13, Drake found another groove in the late stages of the second, rolling through another 7-1 rally to take the 25-14 victory.

The third set was a polar opposite of the first two as Drake needed several extra points to earn the 33-31 win. Indiana State led multiple times and as late as 31-30. Macy Daufeldt eventually put the Bulldogs in front before a Sycamore attack error provided the final blow as the Bulldogs earned their seventh victory by sweep of the season.

As a team, Drake hit at a .376 clip, their highest percentage of the conference season so far. The Bulldogs also out-blocked Indiana State 14-4.

Haley Bush led all players with 14 kills and was one of three Bulldogs to record a service ace. Taylor Oberpriller and Macy Daufeldt also added double digit kills with 12 and 10, respectively. Kacie Rewerts led the match with eight blocks, her fifth eight-block performance of the season.

"[I'm] really proud of our team tonight," Drake head coach Darrin McBroom said. "Indiana State is doing some really good things, and they certainly found some success in the third set. I liked the composure our team demonstrated in closing out that third set."

Drake will conclude their weekend tomorrow evening with another road tilt at Evansville. The Bulldogs and Purple Aces will get the ball in the air at 5 p.m.
