Men's Basketball Selected as No. 12 seed, Plays Miami in NCAA Tournament First Round

The Drake men's basketball team heard its name called as a No. 12 seed and will play Miami on Friday, March 17 in Albany, N.Y.

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Drake men's basketball team learned it will play the Miami Hurricanes on Friday, March 17 at 7:25 ET/6:25 CT in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Albany, New York at MVP Arena. The matchup will be televised live on TBS.

Miami, which owns a 25-7 record, was co-champions of the Atlantic Coast Conference with Virginia with a 15-5 league record. Miami is ranked No. 13 nationally in the latest coaches poll, while being ranked No. 14 in the Associated Press poll. The Hurricanes advanced to the Elite Eight during the 2022 NCAA Tournament.

The winner of that game will play the winner of the Indiana-Kent State contest in Sunday's second round of the NCAA Tournament. The first and second round games will be played at MVP Arena in Albany.

The Bulldogs, who have been idle since earning the automatic qualifying berth by winning the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference tournament March 5 earned a No. 12 seed in the Midwest Region. Houston is the No. 1 seed in the Midwest Region. Miami (25-7) is seeded No. 5, while Indiana (22-11) is No. 4 and Kent State (28-6) is No. 13.

This will mark Drake's sixth appearance in the NCAA Tournament, including the second during coach Darian DeVries' tenure at the school with the Bulldogs playing in the 2021 NCAA Tournament when it beat Wichita State in the First Four before falling to USC in the round of 64.

The Bulldogs own a 27-7 record  — the second most single-season wins in school history only trailing the 2007-08 squad, which went 28-5.
