Softball Ends Skid with 9-0 Shutout of Creighton

Dighton, Lightner each hit homers and drive in seven combined runs in Drake win

OMAHA, Neb. – The Drake University softball team (7-20, 0-6) snapped a 10-game losing streak with a road victory this evening. The Bulldogs traveled west to Omaha, Neb. for a tilt with the Bluejays of Creighton (13-19, 0-6). Drake used an explosive offensive display to take down the Jays 9-0 in five innings.

The Bulldogs set the tone for the afternoon in the top of the first inning when Emma Dighton delivered a two-RBI double to the right center gap that brought Emily Valtman and Haylee Lehman home.

Drake continued their streak in the next stanza as an Addie Lightner home run, her third of the year, extended the Dogs' lead to 3-0.

Both teams jockeyed through three scoreless innings until the Bulldogs delivered the final blows. Dighton started the visitors' half of the fifth frame with a two-run shot over the left field fence for her team-best fifth round-tripper of the year.

Drake's productive fifth inning continued when Skylar Rigby singled to score Lehman. Lightner drove in two more later in the inning with a double down the left field line before another single from Carey Koenig plated Sami Miller to reach the eventual 9-0 final.

The tandem of Dighton and Lightner combined to go 5-for-6 with seven RBI, two home runs, and two runs scored.

Paige Bedsworth (1-5) went the distance while earning her first win of the season for the Bulldogs. The sophomore hurler fanned four Bluejays while allowing just three hits and three walks in the shutout victory.

Drake will return to Ron Buel Field in Des Moines this weekend when they host Murray State for a three-game series from Friday, Mar. 31 to Sunday, Apr 2.
