DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake women's tennis team finished their regular season schedule this weekend with a road match and a home match in back-to-back days. The Bulldogs (14-7, 7-1) swept the final weekend of the regulation year to extend their winning streak to six matches.
Drake 6, UNI 1
The weekend opened on the road as the Bulldogs battled in-state rival UNI in Cedar Falls. The Bulldogs dominated from the first serve at UNI including a sweep of the doubles action. The duo of
Mille Haagensen and
Darinka Stepan rolled through the No. 1 doubles bout with a 6-0 win over UNI's team of Andrijana Brkic and Kim Zizek.
Brkic proved to be the Panthers' lone bright spot in singles play, handing Drake's top dog
Ines Stephani just her second conference singles loss of the year.
Despite Stephani's stumble, the Bulldogs managed to secure the team win with victories in the five other singles matches, all of which coming in straight sets.
Drake 5, Murray State 2
The Bulldogs returned home today for their final match of the regular season this afternoon. Drake hosted MVC-newcomer Murray State for their Senior Day contest. The Racers provided a bit more of a challenge for Drake, but the Bulldogs earned a 5-2 victory, their sixth in-a-row.
After dropping the No. 1 doubles match, Drake came back to earn the doubles point with wins in the final two.
Elizabete Klavinska and
Kendall Hunt, Drake's lone Senior Day honoree, capped the tandem action with a 6-3 win.
Murray State snagged a pair of singles wins as No. 2 player Emma Honore, who was part of the Racers' winning doubles group, and No. 3 Annika Pschorr played their way to wins.
Drake did enough to get the job done, though, as
Ines Stephani,
Oriana Parkins-Godwin, and
Rebecca Ehn all earned wins in straight sets and
Jyun-Yi Lee won via forfeit in the No. 6 position.
"I want to thank all the supporters and alumni that helped us honor Kendall [Hunt] today," Drake head coach Breaunna Addison said. "She's been instrumental to the success of our team this year, and I was proud to see her close out her final home match as a Bulldog with a win."
"The fans really got behind us today," Addison continued. "And it helped us get the win against a tough MVC opponent. I'm excited to watch us compete for an MVC title next week."
Next up, the Bulldogs and the rest of The Valley will travel to Normal, Ill. for the 2023 MVC Championship from April 21-23. Drake enters the tournament as the No. 2 seed in the MVC with a 7-1 record, their lone loss coming to regular season champion Illinois State.
Drake will get their quest for a crown underway at noon on Saturday, Apr. 22 against the winner of No. 3 Belmont and No. 6 Bradley.
