Bulldogs clinch berth in 2023 NCAA tournament

NORMAL, Ill. – The Drake women completed the championship sweep for Bulldog tennis this afternoon. The Bulldog ladies (16-7, 7-1) joined the Drake men after they won their respective conference tournament title yesterday. The Bulldogs took down No. 1 seed and tournament host Illinois State in a back-and-forth affair earlier today.

Drake's first point ended up being their most crucial as the Bulldogs' No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams clinched the opening score. The lethal tandem of Oriana Parkins-Godwin and Ines Stephani got the Dogs on the board before Rebecca Ehn and Elizabete Klavinska sealed the doubles point.

The Redbirds found more success in the singles leg of the match, splitting the six matches with Drake. Parkins-Godwin continued her fantastic freshman campaign with the first singles win of the day for Drake, a 6-2, 6-0 thumping of Silvia Pomarolli.

Rebecca Ehn kept the Bulldogs knotted with Illinois State before Mille Haagensen, Drake's No. 2 player, capped the championship match with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Alexandra Abyasova.

With wins in their respective conference tournament championships, both Drake men and women have qualified for the NCAA Championships in the same season for the first time in Bulldog history. The Bulldog women have now reached the NCAA tournament four times in program history, and three times since 2000.

The Bulldogs now await their assignment in the NCAA tournament. Drake's first round opponent and location reveal will be streamed as part of the NCAA Selection Show on NCAA.com on Monday, May 1 at 5 p.m. The first two rounds of of the NCAA Championships will be played on campus sites between May 5-7.
