DES MOINES, Iowa -- Drake women's soccer utilized a unique goal from a freshman and a clutch goal from a senior to deliver UNI its first loss of the season, 2-1 in the Missouri Valley Conference opener at Drake Stadium on Sunday (Sept. 17).
"UNI came into the game with so much confidence being undefeated while we were coming off arguably our worst half on Wednesday," head coach
Lindsey Horner said. "Credit to our players for focusing on the task at hand."
Five minutes into the match,
Zoey Mahoney executed a flip throw from the far sideline trying to propel the ball near the six-yard box. She accomplished that and then some when the UNI goalkeeper Caitlin Richards reached for the ball and it bounced out of her grasp into the bottom right corner of the net for an extraordinary goal.
Drake (5-2-2) built off of that excitement to control the first half.
Addie Ford helped the Bulldogs maintain a 1-0 lead at halftime with a diving save to her left in the 42nd minute.
The Bulldogs expanded their advantage in the 58th minute when
Angela Gutierrez sent a terrific service from the near sideline to
Emma Nagel in the middle of the six-yard box. Nagel centered the ball and knocked it into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead.
Eight minutes later, UNI (7-1-1) cut the lead in half as
Delaney Goertzen attempted to pass the ball to Ford in the box, but Macy Smith stepped in front and buried the ball into the open net.
Both teams combined for a total of 16 shots in the second half (Drake-9, UNI-7) as the Bulldogs fended off two late Panther corners for a 2-1 win over their rivals.
"We felt we would have a good day if we kept UNI in front of us and got our midfield to do a lot of the work," Horner said. "Our back four were incredibly disciplined and our midfield worked in unison so well. I'm proud of how we executed the game plan. We are pleased to get three points at home and are excited for Thursday night's Mental Health Awareness game."
Drake will conclude its eight-game homestand by welcoming Southern Illinois to Drake Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m.
