DES MOINES, Iowa -- In its Mental Health Matters game donning green uniforms, the Drake women's soccer team persevered in a thrilling second half to top Southern Illinois, 2-1 at Drake Stadium on Thursday (Sept. 21).
"Credit SIU for making that an exciting game," head coach
Lindsey Horner said. "We saw a very good version of them tonight."
Drake (6-2-2, 2-0 in MVC play) controlled possession for most of the match and outshot Southern Illinois, 8-2 in the first half including three shots on goal, all saved by Saluki keeper Chantelle Symes. At halftime, both teams were scoreless.
The Bulldogs only needed a couple of minutes to break the scoreless deadlock in the second half. During the 48th minute,
Madelyn Smith sent a corner kick into the six-yard box where
Angela Gutierrez tapped the ball to
Amelia Crabtree. The senior from Burlington, Wis., ripped the ball off the crossbar into the back of the net for a 1-0 advantage.
Southern Illinois (1-5-3, 0-2) responded quickly in the 54th minute on a long strike from McKensey Bunch in the top left part of the goal for the equalizer.
The score remained tied 1-1 until the 77th minute.
Zoey Mahoney conjured up her magic again on a flip throw into the six-yard box finding the head of
Emma Nagel.
Layla Kelbel was waiting for the ball on the left side of the box and deposited the ball outside the reach of Symes for the eventual game-winner.
"For as much of the time we had the ball we still need to turn those possessions into more shots," Horner said. "We are obviously excited to start the conference season with six points. Our long homestretch ends and we get to test our resolve on the road."
The Bulldogs will play their first road game since Aug. 20, with a trip to the windy city to face UIC on Sunday, Sept. 24.
