Bulldogs Bested in Chicago

Maria Cervello scored her first goal as a Drake Bulldog in the road defeat.

CHICAGO -- The Drake women's soccer team suffered its first road and conference loss of the season in a 3-1 decision against UIC at Flames Field on Sunday, Sept. 24.

"UIC was up for the game and on the front foot," head coach Lindsey Horner said. "We were a step slow and not as sharp as we needed to be to get points on the road. The energy and competitiveness we needed for 90 minutes came out at the end, but our urgency to compete and battle for each other can't waiver."

UIC (3-5-2, 2-1-0 in MVC play) scored off a corner kick in the game's opening minutes. Makenna Maloy served the corner right in front of the Drake goal in the six-yard box. Emmy Higgins got a piece of it and it barely crossed the goal line although Haley Horman almost prevented the score as a last line of defense.

The Bulldogs (6-3-2, 2-1-0) only needed until the 11th minute to answer. On the attack near the sideline, Layla Kelbel set up Maria Cervello on the run at the left side of the box. Cervello turned and knocked the ball into the left side of the net left empty by the UIC goalkeeper Sara Sanabria.

Just before halftime in the 41st minute, the Flames regained the lead, 2-1 when Katelyn Nardulli drilled the ball top shelf from straightaway well outside the 18-yard box in the upper left corner past a diving Addie Ford. UIC outshot Drake 7-2 in the first half while leading the visitors, 2-1 at the break.

At the top of the 18-yard box in the 53rd minute, Sophie Jaime looped the ball into the right side of the net with her left foot as the Flames extended their advantage to 3-1.

"We got a taste of an MVC battle on the road," Horner said. "While it hurts to be on the wrong side of the score line today, we will regroup for Thursday and certainly be focused for our next away game."

The Bulldogs will return to Drake Stadium to play Indiana State Thursday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. on Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night.
