Women's Soccer Rebounds with 2-0 Shutout of Indiana State

Madelyn Smith and Emma Nagel both scored off Laura Riesenbeck's assist as the Bulldogs got right back into the win column.

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Drake women's soccer bounced back with a decisive 2-0 shutout victory over Indiana State at Drake Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 28. The Bulldogs improved to 7-3-2 overall and are off to a 3-1-0 start in Missouri Valley Conference play while the Sycamores dropped to 1-4-6 (0-2-1).

"This performance was a great response to our UIC game," head coach Lindsey Horner said. "Our midfield was so hard to break down and Avery (Mertz) did a great job stepping into center back for us tonight. This was a well-earned shutout from our players."

The match was scoreless until the 44th minute when Laura Riesenbeck sent a beautiful cross from the near sideline to Madelyn Smith, who took the ball into the six-yard box before depositing it into the left side of the net for a 1-0 edge right before halftime.

Emma Nagel doubled Drake's advantage off of another wonderful cross by Riesenbeck into the six-yard box, this time during the 75th minute. Nagel balanced the ball and rocketed it past Sycamore goalkeeper Maddie Alexander with her right foot for the crucial score.

"Madelyn (Smith) scores in training at will," Horner said. "For her to get rewarded in a game is exciting. Emma's (Nagel) goal came at such a pivotal moment when the game was getting transitional and it really just put the game away. Laura's (Riesenbeck) performance on both sides of the ball tonight was that of a mature, experienced player."

Addie Ford made three timely saves, all in the second half to secure the shutout with outstanding work from defenders Avery Mertz, Brooke Davies, Zoey Mahoney and Lily Overstreet

"We picked up some injuries over the last week so this weekend off allows for much-needed rest and recovery before we head to Missouri State," Horner said.

The Bulldogs head to Missouri State on Thursday, Oct. 5 for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
