Women's Soccer Preview: Indiana State

The Bulldogs are back in Des Moines to play host to Indiana State under the lights.

Quick Kicks
-Drake women's soccer returns home to Drake Stadium with the Indiana State Sycamores in town on Thursday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. for Faculty & Staff Appreciation Night.
-The Bulldogs lost their Missouri Valley Conference game of the season in a 3-1 defeat at UIC on Sunday, Sept. 24.
-Sunday marked the first time this season that the Bulldogs have lost by more than one goal and the first time this year they have allowed more than two goals.
Sunday was also Drake's first road game since Aug. 20 and only their second true road contest of the season.
-Transferring to Drake from Central Methodist, Maria Cervello scored her first goal in a Bulldog uniform in the 3-1 loss at UIC while Layla Kelbel notched the second assist of the season and her career.
-Drake enjoyed its best start to the season through 10 games (6-2-2) since beginning the 2016 campaign 8-1-1.
-Drake's six wins surpassed last year's win total when the Bulldogs finished the 2022 season with a 5-8-6 overall record.
-Senior Amelia Crabtree scored her first career collegiate goal and Layla Kelbel knocked in the game-winner late to defeat SIU on Thursday, 2-1 (Sept. 21) in the Mental Health Matters game.

Scouting Indiana State
The Sycamores are 1-3-6 overall and 0-1-1 in MVC after a 2-0 loss to Valparaiso on Sunday (Sept. 24) after Indiana State played Belmont to a scoreless tie the week before on Sept. 17. Indiana State's lone win of the season occurred on Sept. 10 in a 2-1 triumph over SIUE. 
 
Junior Maddie Helling leads the Sycamores in scoring with a pair of goals. Junior Mackenzie Kent has let off a team-high 22 shots this season (13 on goal) and has one goal to show for it thus far. Maddie Alexander has 41 saves and three shutouts to her credit this season. 
 
Paul Lawrence enters his first season as the Indiana State head women's soccer coach after five seasons at NCAA Division-II Florida Southern, where he posted a 36-32-13 record from 2017-2022. Before moving to the Sunshine State, Lawrence led the Knox College Prairie Fire of NCAA Division-III to a 35-20-3 mark over three seasons. 
 
Series History vs. Indiana State
Drake commands a 16-6-3 lead in the all-time series after a 2-0 win in Terre Haute late last season on Oct. 16, 2022.
