VERMILLION, S.D. – Drake volleyball (4-4) climbed back to the .500 mark with a 3-0 sweep of IUPUI (4-5) this evening. The Bulldogs' win was their second in as many games at the South Dakota Classic.
The Bulldogs opened the match with a convincing 25-12 win in the first set. Drake allowed the Jaguars to earn an early 1-0 lead but quickly rattled off four-straight points and never gave up the lead in the period. Drake led by as many as 12 points as back-to-back kills from
Addison Beagle and
Taylor Oberpriller finalized the victory.
IUPUI came back in the second set and gave the Bulldogs all they could handle. The two teams traded scores through much of the set and swapped 4-0 rallies in the middle portion of the frame. Drake eventually took the final lead and earned the 26-24 set win on two-consecutive Jaguar errors.
Drake returned to form in the third set, rolling out to an early 12-6 lead with help from two separate 5-1 rallies. The Bulldogs kept the foot on the gas as the third period progressed, eventually building another eight-point advantage.
Macy Daufeldt provided the final nail in the coffin with a kill to secure the 25-19 set win and 3-0 match victory.
Daufeldt posted a match-best 16 kills for the second-straight contest while
Haley Bush added another 10.
Kara Peter came on as a reserve and posted a season-high seven kills from the right side.
Addison Beagle continued her efficient play, dishing out 39 assists.
"It was good to get a second win in the tournament," Drake head coach
Darrin McBroom said after the Bulldogs' win. "I'm happy we were able to do it in three, but the second set demonstrated that we have some things to improve [upon]. Overall, the team did some good things and showed some growth. [Haley] Bush has showed her old self again this weekend…she had 10 kills with no errors, so we're happy with what she's doing along with [Macy] Daufeldt on the pin. I'm also extremely proud of our middle hitter offense these last two matches…it's nice to see Ashlynn [Kuhn] and [Kacie] Rewerts perform well."
Drake will finish their stay at the South Dakota Classic with another neutral site matchup tomorrow morning. The Bulldogs will face off against South Florida at 10 a.m.
