DES MOINES, Iowa – Drake women's tennis (2-2) bounced back from a winless opening weekend with a pair of victories in their most recent outings. The Bulldogs took down Milwaukee in Des Moines on Friday, Jan. 26 before traveling to Marquette where they earned their second-straight shutout earlier today.
Drake 4, Milwaukee 0
The Bulldogs made quick work of Milwaukee on Friday evening, picking up their first win of the season. Drake took two of three in the doubles action as
Darinka Stepan and
Mille Haagensen teamed up for the win in the No. 1 spot and the duo of
Ines Stephani and
Rebecca Ehn closed it out in the second position.
Drake proceeded to own the singles portion of the match, needing just three wins to secure the match victory. Stephani won in straight sets at No. 1 (6-1, 6-0).
Elizabete Klavinska and
Nicole Lee stepped up for the match-clinching results at No. 3 and No. 6, respectively.
"We were excited to get the first win of the season," Drake head coach
Breaunna Addison said. "In doubles, we started off behind the ball and got down early on all 3 courts, but settled in well, trusted our game plan, and battled hard to secure the doubles point. In singles, we set the tone early, and never let up. Our goal was to maintain that momentum into our match at Marquette."
Drake 7, Marquette 0
Addison's squad did more than maintain their momentum at Marquette with a dominant 7-0 win over the Golden Eagles. The tandems of Stephani/Ehn and Klavinska/Lee earned wins in doubles play to go up 1-0 in the match.
The Bulldogs proceeded to control the entirety of singles play as Stephani won again in the top spot. Haagensen outlasted Marquette's Emma Davis at No. 2 (6-4, 3-6, 10-6) before Klavinska, Ehn, and Stepan each won convincingly. Lee closed things out in the sixth singles spot.
"Marquette is a tricky team," Addison explained. "Especially on the road. We managed the dynamic of the match well from the first point by putting our heads down staying tough when it mattered most. I'm happy with the way we competed across the board and hope we will continue to build on a successful weekend."
Drake will have their hands full next weekend with three matches in as many days. The Bulldogs are set to host Omaha on Friday, Feb. 2 before traveling to Sioux Falls, S.D. for a pair of neutral site tilts against Montana State and South Dakota.
