POWELLS POINT, N.C. – The Drake men's golf team ended its fall season at the ODU/Kilmarlic Intercollegiate on Tuesday afternoon. The Bulldogs finished in seventh place in the 14-team field with a final team score of 866 (294-284-288).
Jake Weissenburger posted the best finish on the leaderboard for the Bulldogs tying for 10th carding a 212 total (73-69-70). This marked the second top-10 for the sophomore this season.
Nikko Ganas and
Nate Spear were next in line for Drake as the pair tied for 18th. Ganas posted steady rounds of 72-70-73 on his way to a 215 total. Meanwhile, Spear fired rounds of 75-69-71 for his 215 score.
Jack Dumas ended his tournament tied for 43rd at 224 (74-76-74) and
Parker Payne rounded out the Bulldog lineup in 66th (79-82-77).
"I thought overall we played pretty solid," Drake head coach
Matt Lewis said. "We had the third most birdies in the tournament with 51, while the most was 53. We just had too many doubles each round that hurt us from really going low. Jake, Nikko, and Nate all finishing in the top-18 is great. It was also a challenge with Jake and Jack playing with bad colds and low energy. I was proud of how those two battled. They definitely fought through a challenging situation.
"We will take a small break this next week as it has been a busy two months playing five tournaments," Lewis continued. "We are hoping the weather continues to be nice to get some quality practice in the next several weeks."
Georgetown claimed the team title with a total score of 846 (287-275-284). Justin LaRue from Longwood won individual medalist honors with a 202 (71-64-67) total.
The Bulldogs will take to the tees next after the calendar turns to the new year for the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, Feb. 24-26.
