Wills Sets Program Digs Record in Sweep of Evansville

Libero Jada Wills etches herself into Drake history as Bulldogs pick up another win

DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake volleyball team resumed its weekend of play at the Knapp Center as it played host to Evansville on Saturday. The Bulldogs tallied their second sweep of the weekend defeating the Aces in straight sets, 3-0 and saw Jada Wills become the career digs record holder.

The Bulldogs began the first set using a 4-0 scoring streak to gain an early lead over the Aces, 6-2. Evansville battled back over the course of the middle stages, however, and brought the set even at 12-12. Drake regained its lead shortly after on a 3-0 run with kills by Macy Daufeldt and Ashlynn Kuhn, which forced the Aces to call a timeout at 19-15. The Bulldogs never trailed for the rest of the set as a Megan Witte kill closed it out, 25-20.

In the second set, Drake and Evansville battled to a 7-7 draw early on, but then the Aces jumped ahead with a 4-0 run to make the score 11-7. Evansville eventually expanded its lead to six with back-to-back kills forcing Drake to call a timeout at the 19-13 mark. The timeout proved to be successful for the Bulldogs as they immediately went on a 5-0 spurt to cut the deficit down to one at 19-18. Drake's momentum continued from there as it took advantage of three consecutive Evansville errors claiming its first lead of the period and then used a 4-0 scoring run to earn the set win, 25-21.

The third set remained competitive between the Bulldogs and Aces as they once again came together for an early stalemate at 9-9 following a Bliss Beck kill. Evansville then gained a bit of momentum going on a 6-0 run to separate itself from Drake just past the halfway point at 15-11. Much like in the second set, however, Drake fought back and pulled within two points at the 19-17 mark. That is where the Bulldogs took over with an 8-0 scoring streak to win the set, 25-19, and the match, 3-0

Wills wrote herself into the history books as she surpassed Kylee Macke's career digs mark of 2,535 in the third set and concluded her night with 27 digs. On the offensive side, Witte paced Drake with 13 kills and Kuhn was next in line with 10. Addison Beagle led the Bulldogs in assists with 18, while Madison Geise recorded a double-double with 15 assists and 10 digs.

Drake will be on the road for its next two matches as it travels to Nashville, Tennessee to take on Belmont (Nov. 1) and then to Murray, Kentucky for a contest with the Murray State Racers (Nov. 2).
