Aggressive Bulldog Attack Blanked by Indiana State

Sycamore keeper makes 16 saves to hand Drake 2-0 loss

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Drake women's soccer team looked to extend their winning streak to three games on Thursday night with a trip to Terre Haute for a matchup against Indiana State. The Bulldogs were firing all night long, outshooting the Sycamores 24-6 overall and 17-3 on goal, but could not find a gap as Indiana State went on to win, 2-0.

"Our sport can be so cruel," Drake head coach Lindsey Horner said. "We came out flying and their keeper made some good saves. We had so much possession and carried the game, but two critical errors were the difference. Credit to ISU for having a good game plan and their keeper for playing well."

The Bulldogs (3-6-4, 2-2-0) had the blitz on from the opening kick with a dozen first-half shots compared to Indiana State's four. Despite the wide Drake-favored margin in attempts, Indiana State carried a 1-0 lead into the half after Grace Quinn scored her second goal of the year in the 36th minute.

Drake matched their shooting output in the second half with 12 more while Indiana State (7-3-3, 2-1-1) managed just two tries. That lopsided number again proved irrelevant as Brooklyn Woods scored her third goal of the season in the 64th minute. That second goal widened the ISU advantage, and Drake's misfortune continued until the final horn as Indiana State held on for the victory.

"In terms of performance and work rate," Horner continued, "I'm really proud of how we played. Madelyn [Smith] and Layla [Kelbel] were so dangerous on the ball and, if we keep getting them to grow their game the way they did tonight

Layla Kelbel and Madelyn Smith led the aggressive Drake attack with six shots and five shots, respectively. Zoey Mahoney added four attempts while Angela Gutierrez had three and Eve Blakey had a pair. As a team, the Bulldogs' 10 corner kicks outdid Indiana State's two.

In goal, Addie Ford recorded two saves while Indiana State's Maddie Alexander recorded an impressive 16 stops.

Drake will conclude their Hoosier State road trip this weekend with a Sunday matinee at Evansville. The Bulldogs and Purple Aces will kick things off at 1 p.m.
