NEWTON, Kan. – The Drake men's golf team ended its time at the Grier Jones Shocker Invitational on Tuesday afternoon after three days and three rounds of competition. The Bulldogs placed 11th in the 14-team field and posted a total score of 883 (301-294-288).
Nate Spear recorded the best finish for Drake firing a 54-hole total of 220 (75-76-69), which placed him tied for 26th on the leaderboard. Spear's final round of 69 was the low-round of the tournament for the Bulldogs and matched his personal best of the season.
Right behind Spear was the duo of
Jack Dumas and
Jake Weissenburger, who tied for 33rd with final scores of 221. Dumas carded rounds of 73-72-76, while Weissenburger shot rounds of 78-71-72.
Nikko Ganas improved his position each round and finished one shot behind Dumas and Weissenburger at 222 (76-75-71).
Dylan Drogemuller rounded out the Bulldog lineup with a 234 final score (77-77-80).
"I thought we had many positives to take away from this tournament and I was proud how we scored better each round," Drake head coach
Matt Lewis said. "We had too many doubles each round, which were mostly from mental mistakes and poor course management. The final round we had it going at 10-under through roughly 13 holes. Unfortunately, we struggled to finish and missed out on an opportunity to pass a few more teams."
Tournament hosts Wichita State took home the team title at 864 (293-286-285) and Xavier's Kellen Dean won individual medalist honors with a 209 (73-66-70) final score.
Drake will have next week off before it concludes its fall season at the ODU/Kilmarlic Intercollegiate, Oct. 20-22.
