Women's Basketball Preview: Creighton & Iowa

Drake is ready to face off against top tier teams over next three games

The Basics
The Drake women's basketball team's early 2-0 record will be put to the test over the next stretch of games with a few top tier opponents on the docket. The Bulldogs will travel to Omaha to battle against the 21st ranked Creighton Bluejays (Nov. 11) before coming back to the Knapp to host in-state rival Iowa (Nov. 17).

Bulldog Bites
Drake opened the year with a comeback victory over North Dakota State on the road and began its home slate with a 95-70 drubbing of 2024 WNIT Champion Saint Louis. The Bulldogs have won their last 10 season debuts and are now 4-0 in schedule-opening games under Suzie Glazer Burt Head Coach Allison Pohlman.

Anna Miller, who missed her career high by just a point in the Dogs' win over SLU, currently leads the team with an average of 23 points per game. She also paces the rebounding effort with 11 boards per contest. Courtney Becker, Katie Dinnebier, Abbie Aalsma, and Ava Hawthorne are also averaging double figures through the first two games.

Scouting Creighton
Creighton finally got their 2024-25 schedule underway on Friday evening with a road trip to South Dakota State, one of the premier mid-major teams in the nation. The Bluejays jumped out early against SDSU, but the Jackrabbits stormed back with a nearly 50-point second half to earn the 76-71 result.

Creighton head coach Jim Flanery is in his 23rd season leading the Bluejay women. Flanery has amassed a record of 427-269 during his tenure.

Drake leads the all-time series with Creighton by a 43-29 margin despite two straight Bluejay wins. Drake's last victory over Creighton came in 2021, capping a 4-0 Bulldog run in the series, and their most recent triumph in Omaha came a year before in 2020.

Scouting Iowa
A new era of Iowa women's basketball has started as former head coach Lisa Bluder, who also coached at Drake earlier in her career, and star player Caitlin Clark have moved on from the Hawkeye program. Another former Bulldog, Jan Jensen, has assumed the head coaching role and boasts a talented roster of Hawkeyes. Iowa began their season with a 91-73 win over Northern Illinois. The Hawks will take on Virginia Tech in Charlotte, N.C. and host Toledo prior to making the short trip to Des Moines.

Jan Jensen is in her first season as the Hawkeyes' head coach after a lengthy tenure assisting Bluder's efforts. The Hawkeyes and Bulldogs will both be celebrating a milestone in the Knapp Center as Drake women's basketball will observing the program's 50th anniversary.

The Bulldogs trail Iowa in their all-time series, 30-25, and have lost 19 of the last 20 meetings. Drake's only recent win came in Des Moines during the 2016 season.

Drake will then turn tropical with a stint in San Juan, Puerto Rico over the Thanksgiving holiday. While on the island, the Bulldogs will play three games in as many days with bouts against Wyoming, Green Bay, and Washington State.
