DES MOINES, Iowa – No last second-heroics needed this time, just some solid defense down the stretch.
Isaiah Jackson put up a 21-point, 12-rebound double-double and the Drake men's basketball team clamped down on the defensive end to pull away from Green Bay 72-62 at the Knapp Center on Saturday night to remain unbeaten.
Tavion Banks added a career-high 19 points for the Bulldogs (11-0), one of just four unbeaten teams in Division I, and
Cam Manyawu scored 16, including three key baskets after grabbing offensive rebounds in the final 6 minutes as Drake wrapped up the non-conference portion of its schedule.
Jackson was much more aggressive looking for his shot after totaling just 14 points in the previous five games. He made 9-of-12 shots, including his third 3-pointer of the season, and added three assists and two steals. His 21 points were a season high – his previous best had been nine – and the 12 rebounds matched his career high.
Banks went 8-for-12 from the field in reaching double figures for the fourth time in the last five games. He had scored only four points and shot 1-for-7 in Tuesday night's 73-70 overtime victory over Kansas State, which the Bulldogs won on
Bennett Stirtz's 3-pointer with 3.4 seconds left.
Manyawu also shot it well, going 6-for-9 and grabbing seven rebounds – four on the offensive end. Stirtz scored 11 points and handed out six assists while playing all 40 minutes, the eighth time he has played the entire game this season. That includes all 45 minutes in the Kansas State victory.
Drake won for the 27th straight time at home, second-longest active streak in Division I, and ran its non-conference winning streak in the Knapp Center to 49.
The Bulldogs outrebounded the Phoenix 29-26, with 13 of those boards coming on the offensive end, which led to a 19-5 edge in second-chance points. Drake also had a commanding 48-26 edge in points in the paint, which helped them offset their season-worst 3-for-19 shooting from 3-point range.
Mac Wrecke's 19 points led Green Bay (2-12), which lost of the ninth straight time and played for the third time this season Anthony Roy, who shares the national scoring lead with a 27.5 average.
The Phoenix caused Drake problems for much of the game, often breaking down the defense to get shots inside before the Bulldogs stiffened down the stretch. Drake held Green Bay to three field goals in the last 13 ½ minutes and one of them came on a goal-tending call.
Jackson scored seven straight Drake points to put the Bulldogs ahead to stay after Green Bay took its only lead at 11-10 on Marcus Hall's 3-pointer with 14:14 left in the first half.
Banks converted a three-point play off a pass from Stirtz to start a 15-2 run that stretched the lead to 36-21 before Wrecke scored Green Bay's final nine points of the half to draw the Phoenix to 40-32 at the break.
Green Bay kept hanging around early in the second half, twice cutting the lead to three points and trailing just 56-52 with 7:58 to play. Jackson then buried his 3 and Manyawu went to work inside, scoring on a putback and grabbing another offense rebound and scooping in a shot, all in one motion. After
Mitch Mascari knocked down a 3, Manyawu scored on a third follow shot, capping a 12-2 run that put the Bulldogs safely ahead at 68-54.
Manyawu then topped off the victory when Stirtz bounced a sweet little pocket pass to him and he slammed it home for the Bulldogs' final points.
"These games before break are very tricky," Drake head coach
Ben McCollum said. "They are tough games to get yourself up for and I didn't think we had a great few practices leading up to it but, and I've said this before, you have to win when you don't play your best. We are seeing a variety of defenses. Teams don't want to guard us straight up, which is fine. It's twofold. One, we need to make sure that we as a staff have a solution to all the randomness that's going on because they just don't want to guard us. Two, we're able to win the games when they do that."
After a break for Christmas, Drake will return to Missouri Valley Conference action when Belmont visits the Knapp Center on Sunday, Dec. 29. That one tips off at 2 p.m. Drake started Valley play with a 66-60 victory at Valparaiso on Dec. 5.
