Saturday Split Ends Hillenbrand Invitational for Bulldogs

Bulldogs walk off Central Michigan for sweep of Chippewas before finale loss vs. IU

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Drake softball team (6-4) settled for another split on the final day of the Hillenbrand Invitational at Rita Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium in Tucson, Ariz. The Bulldogs opened the day with another comeback victory over Central Michigan (1-7), this time in walk-off fashion, before falling to Indiana (10-3) in the Saturday finale.

Drake 4, Central Michigan 3
Unlike the win on Friday, Drake jumped out to an early lead against the Chippewas on Saturday. Abby Martin led off the bottom of the second inning with a walk and, two batters later, Emily Valtman smacked a two-out, two-run homer over the wall in left center for an early 2-0 lead.

The next half inning, Central Michigan answered with two runners on and two down. A Martin fielding error allowed Skylar Coberley to reach and an unearned run to score.

Trialing 2-1 in the top of the fourth inning, CMU snagged a 3-2 lead when Carly Sleeman's double into the gap plated more unearned runs following a throwing error by Destiny Lewis earlier in the frame.

The score remained 3-2 until the bottom of the seventh inning. The first two batters reached in the final frame when Lewis walked and Paige Bedsworth singled to right field. Carey Koenig stepped up to the plate with runners on first and second and two out. Koenig sent a single to left allowing Lewis to score from second.

With Allie Bishoff up, a wild pitch advanced both runners into scoring position. Bishoff grounded the ball to third, but a throwing error helped Drake win the game as Bishoff reached safely and Bedsworth scored the winning run for a 4-3 walk-off victory.

The Chippewas stranded nine baserunners while the Bulldogs made the most of their five hits.

Emma Dighton didn't allow an earned run in the circle during her 4.0 innings of work allowing six hits and striking out a batter. Bedsworth (3-0) pitched 3.0 shutout innings in relief while letting up three hits and picking up a pair of strikeouts.

Indiana 6, Drake 2
The Bulldogs also struck first in its last game in Tucson. Koenig led off the game with a disciplined walk. Bishoff was the next hitter and slapped a single to left field where a fielding error aided Koenig in scoring all the way from first.

Drake controlled a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the third when Brook Benson and Brianna Copeland both hit solo shots for the Hoosiers.

A well-placed double by Parker through the left side added an Indiana run in the bottom of the fourth before Cooper clubbed a leadoff solo homer over the right field fence for a 4-1 advantage.

IU went to score two more runs for a 6-1 lead heading into the final inning when the Bulldogs got a run back. Koenig kept the game alive with a two-out single through the left side of the infield. A throwing error across the diamond by Copeland following a groundball from Bishoff gave Koenig the green light to score from first. A batter later, Dighton grounded out to short to end the game.

Koenig finished 2-for-3 with a walk while Valtman was also 2-for-3 with Drake's lone extra base hit of the ballgame (double).

Jayme Scheck (0-2) took the loss allowing four earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts. Emma Richards came on out of the bullpen to pitch two innings surrendering a run on two hits while setting down one batter via strikes.

Up next for Drake softball is the Oklahoma State/Tulsa Invite from March 1-3 against the likes of Oklahoma State, Tulsa, Kansas City and Seattle.
