Bulldogs Split Second Day at Colorado State Rams Invitational

Drake overpowers Maine, falls in Idaho State rematch

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Drake softball (10-9) put together another 1-1 result on the second day of the Colorado State Rams Invitational. The Bulldogs began Sunday's action with a 9-1 defeat of Maine before suffering a five-inning loss in a rematch against Idaho State

Drake 9, Maine 1
The Black Bears (1-13) struck first in Sunday's opener with an Anna Margetis double. Maine's lead did not last long, though, as Drake turned around in the bottom of the first inning and jumped out in front. Addie Lightner singled to left field before Frankie Rita did the same to right center. Allie Bishoff rounded out productive home half with an RBI ground out to make it 3-1 in favor of Drake.

The Bulldogs added to their lead in the third inning when Heidi Wheeler walked and Emma Dighton came home on a passed ball. Drake's burst continued in the fourth inning with doubles from Carey Koenig and Lightner, who eventually came home on another passed ball.

Koenig later delivered the final blow in the fifth inning with a single to plate Lydia Olejniczak and reach the 9-1 final tally.

Five different Bulldogs recoded multiple base hits. Lightner and Dighton both went 2-for-3. Lighter also drove in three runs while Dighton scored three of her own. Olejniczak went 2-for-2 with a pair of runs. Koenig went 2-for-4 in the leadoff spot.

Jayme Scheck improved to 2-4 in the circle this season. She threw all five innings and struck out three Black Bear batters.

Idaho State 12, Drake 4
The Bulldogs were looking for the weekend sweep of Idaho State (14-10) in Sunday's finale, but the Bengals had other ideas. ISU scored early and often with a run in the first, five scores in the second, and another three in the third.

Drake tried to get another comeback started in the fourth inning when MaKayla Rice singled to right center to drive Allie Bishoff home. Emma Dighton then homered with two runners on for another three scores. Drake trailed 9-4 after four innings.

Idaho State slammed the door in the next stanza with an Alyssa Yee double and an Olivia Robison home run. The Bengals secured the 12-4 result.

Koenig and Lightner again led the Bulldogs with 2-for-3 outings for the both of them.

Dighton's three RBI topped the Bulldog lineup. She also took the loss in the circle after tossing just 1.1 innings. Molly Hoekstra and Emma Richards both saw relief action in the circle.

Drake will conclude their stay in Fort Collins tomorrow afternoon with another date against the host Rams. Drake and Colorado State will get things going at 12:30 p.m.
