DES MOINES, Iowa. – The Drake University softball team won their second game in a row this evening with an 8-0 defeat of Creighton (18-14, 0-3). The Bulldogs rode the arm of starting pitcher
Molly Hoekstra through six innings in a shortened victory over their former league rivals.
After a scoreless start, the Bulldogs got on the board in the bottom of the second inning.
Skylar Rigby singled to left field to drive
Destiny Lewis in from second base for the first run of the day.
Drake (12-13, 0-3) added two more scores in the third inning when
Allie Bishoff came on as a pinch hitter and walked in a run before
Abby Martin sprinted home on a Bluejay throwing error.
The Bulldogs equaled their third inning total in the fifth with two more runs, this time on a towering homer off the bat of
Emma Dighton, her fourth of the season. The two-run shot brought both Dighton and
Carey Koenig in.
Finally, the Bulldogs slammed the door in the sixth inning.
Addie Lightner doubled to left to drive in
MaKayla Rice to make it 6-0. Just one batter and one pitch later, Martin matched with a double of her own to drive in two more and reach the 8-0 mercy rule.
The Creighton offense was almost completely shut down all day as
Molly Hoekstra dealt a gem. She pitched a complete game, her third of the season, and allowed just two hits and no runs while striking out three Bluejays. The win improved her record to 5-1 on the year to lead the Drake pitching staff.
Dighton led the Bulldog offense, going 2-for-4 with a pair of runs and RBI. Martin also logged two hits, totaling a 2-for-3 day with two more RBI and a walk.
The Bulldogs will hit the road this weekend as they get back into conference play. Drake will travel to Normal, Ill. for a three-game set against the Redbirds of Illinois State from Mar. 29-31.
