Men's Tennis Preview: Tulsa

The Bulldogs head to Oklahoma for a Friday match against Tulsa

The Basics
Drake men's tennis is heading South to play the No. 67-ranked University of Tulsa in Oklahoma. The Bulldogs and the Golden Hurricanes will begin play on Friday, Mar. 8 at noon.

Bulldogs by the Numbers
Drake holds an 8-4 record and is looking to expand upon a two-game win streak. The Bulldogs defeated Wichita State 5-2 in their most recent home match, then faced their first conference opponent in North Dakota and won 5-2 on the road. This is the second Oklahoma outing for the Bulldogs this season, as they suffered a loss against Oklahoma State on their previous trip.

The Bulldogs dominate at home but have struggled on the road. When playing in the Roger Knapp Tennis Center, Drake is 6-1 but is 2-3 on the road.

Matija Matic and Oliver Johansson remained a ranked doubles tandem in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's rankings that were released on Mar. 5, as they slotted in at No. 61. The duo slots in the top doubles position for Drake and is 10-6 in matches combining fall and spring play. Markus Bolin remains impressive in singles matches for the Bulldogs, with a 9-2 record in 2024.

Scouting the Competition
The No. 67 ranked Tulsa is 4-8 on the year and 2-3 at home. The Golden Hurricanes began their season with three consecutive match victories but slid into a seven-game skid. Tulsa broke their losing streak against Tulane on Mar. 1 but lost their most recent match 0-4 against Ole Miss.

Tulsa's Pierce Rollins and Timothy Carlsson Seger are ranked No. 55 by ITA. The Golden Hurricane duo is 7-5 and will likely battle against Johansson and Matic in the top doubles position. Rollins also competes in the number one singles position for Tulsa. He was a four-year player at Texas A&M before transferring to Tulsa this season.

Tulsa has a 4-0 historical advantage over Drake in men's tennis, and all four matches have been in Tulsa. The Bulldogs and Golden Hurricane last met in 2021 in a 1-6 Bulldog loss.

Up Next
The Bulldogs will head back to Oklahoma to play the Oklahoma Sooners on Tuesday, Mar. 12 at 6 p.m.
