Stephani Wins Singles Match on Senior Day in Losing Effort

The Bulldogs lost 5-2 against Belmont on senior day in the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.

Des Moines, IA - The Bulldogs failed to secure a victory on senior day, as they lost 5-2 to Belmont. Drake secured a doubles victory and two singles victories in the loss. Bulldog seniors Darinka Stepan, Ines Stephani and Rebecca Ehn were honored before the match.

"Not the farewell we wanted for these seniors as they fell short in their last match here at the Knapp Tennis Center," Head Coach Breaunna Addison said. "These seniors have been instrumental in the success this program has experienced throughout the years. They have brought championships to this program and etched their names in Bulldog Tennis history. These young ladies should hold their heads high as they reflect on their amazing careers here. With that being said we look forward to the MVC conference tournament where these women can once again bring Drake a championship!"

Belmont 5, Drake 2
Stepan teamed up with Mille Haagensen to secure a quick doubles victory on Drake's senior day. Competing in the number two doubles spot, the Bulldog duo won 6-0 over Viktoria Kliimand and Vesa Gjinaj. Stephani and Ehn then lost 6-4 to Mariia Hlahola and Anastasiya Zholdakova in the first doubles position. Stephani and Ehn's loss handed the doubles point to the Bruins because the Bulldogs forfeited the final doubles game.

Haagensen and Stephani got Drake off to a hot start in singles, winning back-to-back matches and giving Drake a 2-1 lead. Haagensen quickly defeated Gjinaj 6-1, 6-1, and Stephani won 6-1, 6-4 on her senior day. The other Bulldogs, however, fell to their Bruin opponents. Ehn lost the first set 6-4 to Zholdakova and battled in the second set but ultimately lost in a 7-5 tiebreaker. Stepan dropped her first set 6-0 against Kliimand but showed resilience to win 6-4 in the second set. Stepan kept the third set close but lost by a 6-4 decision. Nicole Lee lost in the number five singles position in straight sets and the Bulldogs forfeited the final singles match to lose 5-2.
