CHICAGO, Ill. – Drake University softball picked up a 5-2 victory in a series-clinching win at UIC on Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as they closed their road schedule on a high note.
The Bulldogs started their scoring in the top of the first inning as
Abby Martin doubled two runs in. Later in the inning,
Destiny Lewis slugged her seventh home run of the year to drive in two more.
UIC bounced back in their half of the first with a pair of runs. Carlee Jo Clarke walked one home before being brought in on an error. Drake led 4-2 after the first frame.
Both teams failed to scrape any more runs across over the next four innings until Drake added an insurance tally in the sixth. Lewis tripled before being sent home on an
Addie Lightner sacrifice fly. The Bulldog defense held after a pitching change to secure the 5-2 win.
Lewis' produced a 3-for-4 outing with two runs and two RBI.
Abby Martin matched her RBI total while scoring another and going 2-for-4 at the dish.
MaKayla Rice also logged multiple hits while
Emma Dighton and
Carey Koenig walked twice.
Molly Hoekstra improved to 12-5 after striking out two batters over six innings.
Emma Dighton earned her first save of the year after throwing a nearly perfect final frame.
Drake will return home for the remainder of the regular season with a Wednesday night clash against Iowa State and a weekend series with Belmont.
