Drake Relays Alumni Earn 19 Medals at Paris Olympics

Former Blue Oval performers add to elite athletic display at 2024 Summer Games

PARIS, France – The 2024 Olympic Games came to a close in Paris yesterday, capping the two-week event. Elite athletes from across the globe demonstrated their sensational abilities in every discipline, including over 100 former Drake Relays participants representing more than 30 different nations in athletics. Former Blue Oval competitors earned 19 total medals, which would have tied with Hungary for 14th overall if the Drake Relays entered as its own nation.

Five-time Drake Relays champion Ryan Crouser was a highlight in the field events as the current world record holder defended his shot put crown and earned his third-straight Olympic gold. Fellow American and 2024 Relays champion Payton Otterdahl narrowly missed the podium with a fourth-place finish while Jamaica's Rajindra Campbell rounded out the Relays alumni in the men's shot put field with a solid third-place result, earning the first Olympic medal of his career.

Masai Russell earned another American gold, and the first Olympic medal of her career, with a time of 12.33 in the women's 100m hurdles. She outran a loaded field that also featured Relays alumni Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico, the silver medalist, sixth-place finisher Devynne Charlton of The Bahamas, and seventh-place finisher Alaysha Johnson of Team USA.

The two other Drake Relays-related gold medals were fittingly won in relay races as Duan Asemota and Andre De Grasse helped lead Canada to the top spot on the podium in the men's 4x100. South Africa placed second with former Relays runner Shaun Maswanganyi adding to the silver medal squad.

Other relay medal winners include Lee Eppie of Botswana, a member of the silver-medal winning men's 4x400 team, and Nicole Yeargin of Great Britian, a silver medalist in the Mixed 4x400 and bronze medalist in the women's 4x400.

Former Drake Relays champion Anna Cockrell took silver in the women's 400 hurdles, only behind a dominant record-breaking performance from Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone. On the men's side, Brazil's Allison Dos Santos earned bronze in the 400 hurdles.

Kenny Bednarek, who competed collegiately at Indian Hills Community College, took silver in the 200m dash, with a sprint of 19.62, repeating as the second-place finisher after doing the same at the 2020 Tokyo games. Former University of Iowa sprinter and Olympic rookie Brittany Brown took third place in the women's 200m dash. Her time of 22.20 was good enough to earn her first-ever Olympic medal.

Other silver medalists included Jamaica's Shanika Ricketts in the triple jump and a foursome of Americans in Annette Echikunwoke (women's hammer throw), Sam Kendricks (men's pole vault), Katie Moon (women's pole vault), and Daniel Roberts (men's 110m hurdles).

Notable non-medalists include a pair of Nigerians Ese Brume (women's long jump) and Chuk Enekwechi (men's shot put), who finished fifth and sixth in their respective events. Susan Ejore of Kenya took sixth in the women's 1500m, and veteran Kirani James of Grenada earned fifth in the men's 400m dash. American hammer thrower Rudy Winkler came in sixth in the men's hammer throw.

Lastly, Urbandale native and Dowling Catholic graduate Karissa Schweizer competed in both the women's 5000m and 10000m. Schweizer became just the third American athlete ever, and first since 2008, to post two top 10 finishes in both of those races at the same Olympics. The former Missouri Tiger earned ninth in the 10k and 10th in the 5k.
