Drake shows progress with key victories at regional championships

NORMAN, Okla. – Drake women's tennis spent a few days in the Sooner State for the ITA Regional Championships hosted by the University of Oklahoma. The Bulldogs saw some positive steps over the weekend in their penultimate fall event.

Drake went 4-9 as a team in singles play at the ITA Regionals. Both Jana Ruzic and Elizabete Klavinska each won a pair of matches. Ruzic took down Arkansas State's Sarah Millard (6-1, 7-5) and picked up a big win over Nebraska's Tiziana Rossini (2-6, 6-2, 10-3) while Klavinska picked up a forfeit win after upsetting Kansas State's Margaret Jaraczewski (6-4, 7-5) in the first round of consolation play.

Elsewhere, Jordane Dookie earned a singles win over Alisa Reznik of Kansas City (6-3, 6-1).

In doubles play, Dookie paired with Maja Dodik on a run to the round of 32 in the main draw. The Drake duo beat Missouri State's twosome of Matilde Ercoli and Raluca Puscas, 8-2, before dropping their next match.

Ruzic and Klavinska also earned a doubles win over Kansas City's tandem of Amal Gati and Catherine Chrobak, 8-6.

Drake will conclude its fall schedule later this month with the Drake Invite in Des Moines. Tennis action will run from Oct. 31-Nov. 2 at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
