DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake women's tennis team took on DePaul of the Big East Conference on Friday evening. Despite their best effort of the year, Drake's women came up short as the Blue Demons won the match, 6-1.
 
Friday's doubles matches wrapped up in numerical order with DePaul's teams of Hannah Smith/Eva Goncharov and Eleanor Cochran/Sasha Sakura Stula earned wins at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively. Drake's tandem of Jessica Popiol and Shiori Takeda earned their first doubles win of the year in the No. 2 position. Popiol and Takeda took down the Blue Demon pair of Eleanor Nobbs and Roberta Sechi by a 7-5 margin.
 
DePaul had similar success in the singles portion of Friday's match. Smith (No. 1), Stula (No. 2), Goncharov (No. 4), and Isabella Gibson (No. 5) won their matches in straight sets. Tess Caldicott fought hard at No. 3 but could not clip Nobbs.
 
Drake newcomer Jana Ruzic was the brightest star among Drake's singles competitors. Ruzic swept Cochran of DePaul 6-0, 6-0 to tally the Bulldogs' only point of the night.
 
The Bulldogs will look to track down their first win of the season tomorrow vs. Creighton. Drake and the Bluejays will get started at 1 p.m.
