Drake Drops Two Against St. Thomas

Two Tommie homers difference in doubleheader

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Drake softball team took to the diamond for a doubleheader against St. Thomas (MN) as part of the Kansas City Roos Invitational on Saturday. The Bulldogs fell in both contests to the Tommies by scores of 4-2 and 2-1.

St. Thomas 4, Drake 2
The Tommies put the first run on the board in the second with a sacrifice fly to grab an early lead. Drake responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the frame to bring it back it even, however. Natalee Watts drove in the run with a base knock through the right side.

In the third, Molly Hoekstra gave Drake the lead with an RBI base knock of her own, but the back-and-forth nature of the game carried on into the fourth. St. Thomas tied the game with its second sacrifice fly of the game.

The difference in the game came in the sixth inning when Laken Lienhard hit a two-run homer, which gave the Tommies the lead for good.

Six Bulldogs recorded hits in the game. Emma Dighton and Ava Curry each recorded doubles. In the circle, Jayme Scheck took the loss after 4.0 innings but racked up seven strikeouts.

St. Thomas 2, Drake 1
In game two, the Tommies scored their two runs in the third inning. It was another two-run blast, but this time it came off the bat of Cassidy Carby.

That proved to be the only offense the Tommies needed as Ava Kleinfeldt had a strong outing against the Bulldogs in the circle.

Drake made a late push in the sixth when it scored its lone run of the game off a Sam Tourtillott single, but fell short of completing the comeback.

The Bulldogs outhit St. Thomas, 7-4, but had no extra-base knocks in the game. Peyton Driscoll was credited with the loss after tossing 4.2 innings with a pair of strikeouts.

Drake ends its weekend with two more games tomorrow. The Bulldogs will first take on Kansas City at noon followed by another meeting with St. Thomas which will approximately start at 2 p.m.
