IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Drake men's golf team concluded play at the Hawkeye Invitational on Tuesday afternoon and finished tied for eighth after 54 holes of play. The Bulldogs ended their tournament with a team score of 899 after back-to-back rounds of 289 and a final round of 321.
On the leaderboard,
Jake Weissenburger and
Jack Dumas led the way for Drake as the pair tied for 27th at 222. Weissenburger began his tournament with an opening round 2-under, 70, which was the low round of the tournament for the Bulldogs, and followed with scores of 72 and 80. Dumas, meanwhile, carded rounds of 73-71-78 with his second round 71 being the only other round under part shot by a Bulldog for the tournament.
Nate Spear had the low round of the day on Tuesday for Drake with a 77 en route to a tied for 43rd finish. Spear posted scores of 72 and 76 over his first 36 holes to complete his total score of 225.
The final two players in Drake's main lineup were
Nikko Ganas and
Sam Johnson and they finished in solo 66th and tied for 67th, respectively. Ganas shot a 54-hole total of 233 (75-72-86), while Johnson was one shot behind at 234 (74-74-86).
Parker Payne competed as an individual and ended in solo 73rd with a total score of 241 (79-79-83).
Big 12 member Kansas won the team title at 837, which was 19 shots better than runner-up Illinois State at 856. Kansas' Will King claimed individual medalist honors firing a 207 (69-67-71) besting his teammate, Gunnar Broin, by two shots.
"We played well the first two rounds," Drake head coach
Matt Lewis said. "Today the course played very difficult with cold and windy conditions. We really struggled today. It was a rough day for us. The guys were disappointed but we will forget about this quickly and get ready for next week."
Drake returns to the course for the Missouri Valley Conference Championship beginning on Sunday, April 20. The Bulldogs are the host institution for the conference championship, which is being held at Des Moines Golf and Country Club in West Des Moines. The tournament will conclude on Tuesday, April 22 with teams playing 18 holes each day of competition.
