Drake Athletics Elevates Pair of Administrators

Jay Brummel, Alex Crowl promoted within Drake Athletics senior staff

DES MOINES, Iowa – Drake University Director of Athletics Brian Hardin elevated the titles of two Athletic Department staff members.
 
Jay Brummel – Senior Associate Athletics Director, Finance and Operations
Alex Crowl – Associate Athletics Director, Compliance

Closing out his fourth year at Drake Athletics, Brummel was hired as Associate Athletics Director for Finance and Operations in December 2021. Since joining the Bulldogs, Jay has been responsible for overseeing the athletics business office, facilities & events, equipment, welcome & well-being committee, and serves as the human resources liaison. Jay is also the current sport administrator for Football, Men's Tennis, and Women's Tennis.
 
Immediately prior to arriving at Drake, Jay worked at the University of Michigan in a variety of athletic administrative roles centered on managing lead sports facilities and hosting major sports and entertainment events.
 
A native of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Jay earned his bachelor's degree in finance from Butler University in 2013. He was a member of the football team at both Iowa State University (2009) and Butler, where he was a 3-year letter winner. Jay went on to receive his master's degree in athletic administration from Indiana University and his MBA from Drake in December 2024. He currently resides in Norwalk, Iowa, with his wife Kate and two sons, Brett and Cael.
 
Crowl has been the Assistant Athletics Director for Compliance for Drake Athletics since the spring of 2022. Crowl oversees an office of two individuals tasked with ensuring all 18 Bulldog sports teams adhere the compliance rules and regulations administered by the NCAA and various conferences. Starting in the fall of 2024, Crowl was given the additional responsibility of sport administrator overseeing the men's and women's golf programs as well as the women's rowing team. 
 
Crowl received his associates degree from Iowa Western Community College in 2014 where he was a participant on their national championship baseball team. Following IWCC, Crowl received his degree in journalism and mass communications from Iowa State University in 2016 before attending Creighton University for law school where he graduated in 2019. 
 
Crowl served as an intern in the Iowa State Athletics compliance office in 2017, and in the Creighton University Athletics compliance office from 2017-19. 
 
Prior to returning to Iowa, Crowl served as the assistant director for compliance at Pepperdine University from 2019-22. Pepperdine's most notable accomplishment during his tenure was winning the men's golf national championship over Oklahoma in 2021.
